Short bio

António is Assistant Professor at the Department of Sports Biology at the Faculty of Sport (FADEUP) of the University of Porto since 2005. Since 2005 as well, António is a senior researcher at the Research Centre in Physical Activity, Health and Leisure (CIAFEL; I&D) and at
LaMetEx - Laboratory of Metabolism and Exercise hosted at FADEUP.
Research interests lie in the broad areas of Exercise Physiology and Biochemistry. In particular, basic research interests include the study of mitochondrial (dys)function in both health and diseased conditions. Also, the cross tolerance effect of exercise against stress stimuli-induced mitochondrionopathies and hypoxia induced mitochondrial (dys)function are of special interest. Applied research on Exercise Physiology includes the study of the impact of exercise-induced neuromuscular fatigue on performance of humans.
He obtained the graduation degree in Sports Sciences in 1996, the MSc in 1999 and the PhD in 2005 at the Faculty of Sport of the University of Porto. António concluded a 6 year postdoc in the Energy Metabolism in Cardiovascular Diseases and Cancer group of the Centre for Neurosciences and Cell Biology (CNC) at Coimbra. In 2018, António obtained his Tenure at FADEUP.
Since 2003, he made research contributions to the general fields of Exercise Physiology and Biochemistry through the publication of original papers and reviews in international peer-review journals as well as book chapters. Also, he contributed as reviewer of manuscripts for international peer-review journals as well.
During the last years, Antonio has been directly involved in professional football as member of technical staffs. His main roles as sports physiologist are here specified.
